In casting Lingzhi Girl in bronze, I connect lingzhi’s association with immortality to a material long used for monuments and remembrance. Yet permanence is more elusive than either association suggests. Dried lingzhi can endure for centuries, while bronze can be melted down and recast, its material surviving as its form disappears. This transformation carries a desire to preserve a body shaped by growth, while holding open the possibility of further change. For me, the sculpture gives physical presence to the longing for eternity.
