Marking

2016

Medium: Cast Bronze
Dimension: approximate 35”X 25” each

In this series of works, I explore the quiet yet profound realm of domestic life, illuminating the deep meaning inherent in commonplace objects. My work is a heartfelt homage to the women in my life, especially my mother and mother-in-law. Their unending acts of care form the hidden tapestry that binds our homes together.

My process is rooted in attentive observation and begins with the simple act of gathering. I assemble ordinary items, each laden with history—laces, ropes, threads, keys, buttons, and beyond. These artifacts of daily existence carry with them echoes of moments past, bringing to the fore memories, rituals, and familial ties.

Using these collected items as my palette, I employ clay as my medium, not paint or ink. Delicately, I imprint these objects onto clay, crafting detailed impressions that encapsulate their essence. These markings transcend mere physical impressions; they echo the emotional and tactile footprints left by the women who cherished these items.

My journey evolves as I convert these clay impressions into enduring bronze sculptures. This intricate process mirrors the tireless dedication of these women. Initially, I cast the clay into plaster molds, capturing their exquisite nuances. These plaster templates pave the way for rubber molds, which transition to the subsequent step.

As a culmination, I cast these impressions in wax, employing the ancient lost wax casting technique—a reflection of life’s fleeting nature. The metamorphosis from wax to bronze magnifies the monumental impact of these women’s transient contributions at home. Bronze, celebrated for its lasting strength and ageless allure, stands as a testament to their daily endeavors and the indelible mark they etch in our lives.
